The art piece I chose to focus on is Dua lipa´s video clip of the song Future Nostalgia.

The video clip was uploaded to Youtube on the 16th of December, 2019. The song was written by Dua Lipa alongside Clarence Coffee Jr. and was produced by Jeff Bhasker.

The song consider to be a Modern-pop song and features 70´s-80´s disco music elements. (The lyrics of the song are below the pictures ahead).

The architectural part of this art piece is within two main parts – the lyrics and the video clip itself.

Dua Lipa had chosen to film in the beautiful designed sky wood house by Foster + Partners. We can see her dancing, enjoying, and having a good time around the house. As we are hearing the song and watching the clip, we can understand two main messages of the artist – the first one is that she wants to be an influencer, a revolutionist, a person who has an impact on the artistic world, like the line: “You want a timeless song, I wanna change the game. Like modern architecture, John Lautner coming your way”.

The second one is a bit more “deep”. By choosing to film in this specific location and by this line: “Can’t be a Rolling Stone if you live in a glass house (future nostalgia), You keep on talking that talk, one day you’re gonna blast out”, – we can see that the reference has been made between a “fragile” world and the personality of the artist, that is described as hard as a rolling stone.

The artist is actually calling to her listeners and saying – Don’t be afraid – don’t live in a glass world where everything is breakable and fragile – everything is breakable! and that is a fact! – Don’t be afraid to break it, to express yourself, to feel, to create – to live!

Another important reference to this message is in the video clip, when Dua Lipa is on the roof of the house smashing wine glasses like they were golf balls.

In my personal opinion,

I really like the way Dua Lipa has chosen to combine these architectural elements in the song. She is using the house as a reference to the world or, a way of thinking, and presenting it as a platform to emphasize her free-spirit personality or at least the way of living she is willing to have/ she encouraging her listeners to have.

Lyrics

You want a timeless song, I wanna change the game
Like modern architecture, John Lautner coming your way
I know you like this beat ’cause Jeff been doin’ the damn thing
You wanna turn it up loud, Future Nostalgia is the name (future nostalgia)

I know you’re dying trying to figure me out
My name’s on the tip of your tongue, keep running your mouth
You want the recipe but can’t handle my sound
My sound, my sound (future)

No matter what you do, I’m gonna get it without ya (hey, hey)
(Future nostalgia)
I know you ain’t used to a female alpha (no way, no way)
(Future nostalgia)
No matter what you do, I’m gonna get it without ya (hey, hey)
(Future nostalgia)
I know you ain’t used to a female alpha (no way, no way)
(Future nostalgia)

Can’t be a Rolling Stone if you live in a glass house (future nostalgia)
You keep on talking that talk, one day you’re gonna blast out
You can’t be bitter if I’m out here showing my face (future nostalgia)
You want what now looks like, let me give you a taste

I know you’re dying trying to figure me out
My name’s on the tip of your tongue, keep running your mouth
You want the recipe but can’t handle my sound
My sound, my sound (future)

No matter what you do, I’m gonna get it without ya (hey, hey)
(Future nostalgia)
I know you ain’t used to a female alpha (no way, no way)
(Future nostalgia)
No matter what you do, I’m gonna get it without ya (hey, hey)
(Future nostalgia)
I know you ain’t used to a female alpha (no way, no way)
(Future nostalgia)

You can’t get with this, if you ain’t built for this
You can’t get with this, if you ain’t built for this
I can’t build you up if you ain’t tough enough
I can’t teach a man how to wear his pants

I know you’re dying trying to figure me out
My name’s on the tip of your tongue, keep running your mouth
You want the recipe but can’t handle my sound
My sound, my sound (future)
I know you’re dying trying to figure me out
My name’s on the tip of your tongue, keep running your mouth
You want the recipe but can’t handle my sound
My sound, my sound (future)

My sound, my sound, my sound (future)
(Future nostalgia)
