Using different techniques in architecture was not always a very advanced thing. In the very beginning, when people used to live in caves – the technique used to housing were basically finding a cave that could suit the whole family/ tribe and settle down inside it. Little by little, the humankind has gotten more and more advanced with their ability to think and create, and today, it seems that the race of finding and applying new and advanced techniques, and constructions methods, has just begun.
Talking about different techniques of building constructions, we first need to mention the materials available for us:
Stone, Earth, Bricks, wood, Steel, concrete, glass and water (Ice).
Throughout history, there were a few big “jumping” moments pushing architecture forward. One of them was the Roman architecture and constructions. The Romans knew how to use concrete and stone in a way to create magnificat arches, huge structures and big enormous public places- which until that time was a matter of dreaming.
Another “big jump” happend when the Gothic architecture was in trend. The idea was to balance the forces with opposite contra forces. Using columns pillars and different weights.
To sum this chapter up, I think that humankind has developed a lot over the years with its ability to build, plan and perform using different advanced architectural techniques. However, I do think we have a lot to learn if we want to keep using our nature as the main source – as our planet is not in its best shape now days. The future’s architects and engineers need to find better ways to get their constructing material from, to develop better eco-friendly methods and to respect the world’s needs.
